We are joining the intergalactic web of wares! Story Planet is launching an online store, and we are looking for two to four volunteers to take turns processing orders, uploading and placing pictures, and collaborating on other maintenance work surrounding the website. If you have experience in managing a website, and/or online merchandising, we would love for you to join us!

Reggie Rainbow – Editors Needed
A collaborative work between the participants of Story Planet and writer-illustrator Hilary Leung, the children’s storybook Reggie Rainbow is looking for some caring editors who will join the effort as soon as possible in making it the best story that it can be! To this end, we are looking for two volunteers who have experience in editing children’s books and stories. If this is you, please reach out to us!

Kickstarter Campaign for Reggie Rainbow
Continuing the support for our illustrated storybook Reggie Rainbow, the Story Planet community is organizing a Kickstarter campaign to raise publication funds! We are looking for up to four volunteers, ideally with experience and at least with passion, for fundraiser organization, outreach, and bringing the voices of Story Planet participants to fruition!

Keileigh Lowe and Sarah Horobin

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there existed an imaginative and creative world named Story Planet. Orbited by the love and dedication of its volunteer inhabitants, Story Planet has been home to some of the most amazing creatures. And none have been more wonderful then our new intergalactic interns, Keileigh Lowe and Sarah Horobin! From helping to facilitate the Lift Off after school program to reorganizing the space clutter in our back room Keileigh and Sarah have done it all! We here at Story Planet cannot be more grateful for their astronomic contributions and their overall cheerful disposition that makes our little planet shine that much brighter. Story Planet has searched near and far for space travellers like these wonderful ladies and we hope they call this place home for many more light years to come.

We asked Keileigh and Sarah to answer a few questions about themselves to help paint a brighter picture for those who have not met them yet. Check out their responses below!

Introducing Keileigh:

DSC_0243

1. Favourite Planet to live:

I used to live on Mars. It was nice because only a few of us knew about it, but now that they found that water, I guess the secret is out!

2. Favourite book or the last great one you read:

My favourite book is Weaveworld by Clive Barker.

3. Favourite writers:

Douglas Adams is an awesome writer for fiction, but in terms of non fiction I love reading Stephen Hawking so I can really understand the way the universe works!

4. Favourite thing to do on Earth:

I love visual arts, and I love the nature planet Earth has to offer. When I was growing up my dad and I used to go on hikes and then find a nice spot to paint what was around us. I find that as I have gotten older I tend to put things like that on the back burner, but every once in a while I find the time to go up north to my cottage. Temagami lake is my favourite place in the entire universe (even including Mars), and being able to sit under the stars and see the milky way with as much clarity as a photograph, or paint the sun as it is setting, is a truly magical moment.

5. Favourite Earth food:

My favourite current Earth food would have to be Apiecalypse Pizza as it is the best vegan pizza in the city! (And up the street from Story Planet- wink wink)

6. Favourite moment/memory from your experience here:

It is hard to pick just one. Every time a student shares something with me, whether it is some artwork or a smile I try to log it in my brain so I can remember it for years to come. Mithulaa drew a pumpkin for me for halloween and that was awesome. When Hamsa made his origami jumping creature finally jump and laughed for 5 minutes straight I didn’t think we would ever be able to stop. The staff and volunteers at Story Planet inspire me every day, and the students who come could brighten the day of even the grumpiest person. I feel so incredibly lucky to have found such a special place.

Introducing Sarah:

1. Favourite Planet to live:

It’s so hard to pick just one, but if I had to choose, I’d choose Venus. It’s named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, so I feel like I’d fit right in.

2. Favourite book or the last great one you read:

My reigning favourite is Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

3. Favourite writers:

I have a few. Junot Díaz, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Kurt Vonnegut are the first ones that come to mind.

4. Favourite thing to do on Earth:

Anything arts and culture related, really. Watching tv and movies. Reading comics. Going to art exhibits, poetry slams, and concerts. I love being able to see the world with a new set of eyes through these artistic mediums.

5. Favourite Earth food:

Avacados, hands down.

6. Favourite moment/memory from your experience here:

My heart grew three sizes the day I wore a shirt with a smiley face on it and one of the space travellers was so eager to tell me that that my shirt was smiling and it made her smile.

App Play-Testing Session
Our appstronaut team met back up recently to test out their ongoing app design project. With the help of two new team members, they brainstormed ideas for improvements they could make and wrote the following story as a team using the app. How cool! Thanks for sharing, Appstronauts.

The Big Macs
Once upon a time Gregory, the cheerful monkey with eleven children was riding an SUV with eleven seats for his eleven children (twelve seats, including the driver’s seat). They were going on a mission to find McDonalds and eat big macs before the tomato/carrots ate them ALL.

They couldn’t find any McDonalds restaurants. They drove around looking, and by the time they found one, the tomatoes/carrots had eaten all the big macs.

So they went to the trunk of their car and grabbed out their police uniforms and batons and handcuffs and then they arrested the tomatoes/carrots and put them in jail for one MILLION years!!!!!!!!!!
THE END

New Volunteers
IMG_2189On Sunday, we held our first volunteer orientation for the new fall season. Exciting! As an icebreaker, participants wrote down their favourite story, book, or movie, a leader they look up to, their favourite food, and a place they want to visit onto a sticky note. Then, using those words, they worked in small groups to create a fun 5 minute story! The first round of stories are posted below for your reading pleasure and we should have a few more by the end of the week. If you’d like to join the fun, email Michelle at volunteer@sp004.dev.contextstaging.ca to find out how you can get involved!

Genghis Khan’s Quest
The Step City Mongols lost in a crushing defeat to the Byzantine Brawlers at the NFL football match. To make them feel better, Mother Khan took them to Applebee’s for Taco Friday. After they finished their tacos, Genghis wanted some rich and creamy Yak’s milk ice cream. Disappointed by the lack of yak, Genghis beheads the server, but mercifully spares the rest of the Applebee’s staff. To satisfy this craving, Genghis takes the entire team on a quest to Svaneti for authentic yak’s milk ice cream. After eating the ice cream, they end their day with a joyous snow ball fight.

Fears of flying and fish
Natasha’s mom- who hasn’t flown since she was 12- decides to face her fears of flying and fish. She flies to Kyoto, and goes to the best sushi restaurant in the city. She is greeted by Princess Mononoke, who tells her that it’s okay to have fears. Natasha’s mom notices and exclaims, “How we are hungry!”- and they go to get Portuguese egg tarts.

Frankenstein
Frankenstein is walking down the streets of Tokyo looking pretty sad. He’s been having a hard time getting gigs since the band broke up and his solo career started. He sees a sushi joint and decides to cheer himself up with a nice California roll and Sashimi. As he walks through the door he can’t believe his ears! His top song by The Blues Brothers- his old band is blaring! Just like in the movies he sees his old drummer, Pippi Longstocking, is playing the drums in the corner with the Frankenstein monster while holding her pet horse over her head. Just like that- the band was back together.
